New pads can feel a bit mushy until they get seated. This involves a series of speed up, then bring car almost to a stop, speed up, etc. Heard two versions of this. Speed 60-40, and 40-10, ie use your brakes fairly hard in a series of stops from one of these speeds. I've used 40-10. Need to do this for at least a couple of miles. This heats the pads and shapes them to the rotor.
Mushy feel may be coming from not being fully seated, air in the line, or perhaps a bum set of pads. Unless you asked him to bleed the brakes, I would think they should still be as firm or firmer than old. Also asuming you bleed your brakes every two yrs or less to remove water and air
I had a pair of PBR Metalmaster, which are supposed to be a very good pad, cause similar feel when used first thing in the morning. as soon as it had warmed up with 10 min of driving and braking, no problem. But those first 10 min woke you up pretty fast! You could have a similar problem with the quality of pad. Worth going with a known good one, especially when PBR Deluxe can be had for under $40/set almost anywhere.
I too replace rotors after a couple sets of pads. Townsend's site specifically advises against turning Saab rotors.
