George, First of all what year is the car? I'm going to assume (I know, a bad thing normally) it is a 2.3L engine in your car at present. That said I would say from my own experience with my '87 you can do the head gasket and chains in a day whereas I believe the engine swap could take two days easy. While I've never done an engine swap on a Saab I'll leave that time estimate to those who have, but that's my best guess. I've personally been able to do the head gasket in 2-3 hours. That doesn't include having it re-surfaced and checked for flatness, but that should take a good machine shop less than an hour. The timing chain on my car took me about 6 hours only because it was the first time and I had an issue with lining up the oil pump to the pickup tube. The second time, if there is one, I feel confident in doing in less then 3 hours. For me the question would be is the overall condition of the other engine significantly better and is it a lot cleaner. Plus, although I haven't pulled the axles yet so I don't know just how much work that is, I would do the job that is a lot less work. Just my two cents worth.
