The blower motor is enclosed completely in the plastic blower motor housing. There is no way to lubricate the bearings.
Steve Edwards may have a later 9000, equipped with an OFF button on the ACC, whereas you don't have one on your '87, and the blower motor runs all the time; hence needing to pull the fuse.
I did the blower motor replacement on an '88, using the Haynes procedure. I'm not convinced that the hood really needs to be removed, but the one thing I tried to shortcut on - removing the throttle body - I should have done. It's a bigger job in the earlier 9k, because things are tighter. In my '91 and '95 (did both of these in the last two weeks), it's really not that bad of a job, in terms of removing stuff to get at it. It's just a tight fit. Putting it back in is best done in three or four short periods of effort, to save your back. The info on Quasi's website, about rotating it in from the right, seems to work.
