You can try it without removing the throttle body, but I will say it again - I've done this repair on an '88 9kt, '91 9kt and '95 CSE, and on the earlier model the higher intake manifold is in the way. The hood removal was recommended by the Haynes manual. I can't say why. They didn't have a separate explanation about this, but I can say that standing on top of the engine to get the thing back in was both fun and helpful. However, you can do it without the hood removal. Go ahead and try it without pulling the throttle body, as once you find the throttle body is in the way, you can remove it at that point, after you are able to push the blower motor housing back out of the way, to get access to the nuts.
Also, I neglected to mention the windshield wiper assembly. Haynes recommends removal, and on later models I was able to get by without this, but I'm not sure if I could have done the '88 without doing this step.
