I'm pretty much in the same place, and agree with Bill. I haven't found anything quite like the 9000.
Options - find a nice '97 or '98 9000. We are talking 5-6 year old car here, and there aren't a ton of them out there. Still, if you find one at a reasonable price, the performance is fantastic.
A later NG900 isn't a bad choice. Not quite as big as a 9000, but not bad. At all costs avoid the 2-door coupe if you want to carry anything. Yes, you can work around having only two doors, but why would you want to?
The 9-5 wagon isn't a bad idea. I'm just hard pressed to pony up the $$ for a new one. I've driven the 9-5 sedan, but I haven't driven the 9-5 wagon. I really should, just to rule it in or out. Used wagons run about $20K from what I've seen (low miles) - less if you're willing to deal with higher mileage. Although the 9-5 wagon isn't a big car, it just feels like one for those of us used to the 9000 (which is actually SHORTER than a OG900.)
OK folks, turn the flamethrowers on for this one - how about a Volvo V-40? There, I said it and I'm not sorry. The V40 is a very nice size - a hair smaller than a 9000, and feels a little bigger than a NG900/9-3. Performance is decent, not mind-boggling but good enough. A not too dissimilar feel than a Saab. They are quite thin on the ground (the S40 sedan is much more common), and I'm sure they have their own set of issues. But given the choice between a Subie wagon and a V40, well, once you go Swedish, you never go back. Yeah, I know the V40 is probably built in Holland, but what the hell.
I'm curious to see what others offer.
