Yes!.. be concerened.. Hi temps lead to increased wear and acclerate Head Gasket Failure. Unpleasant/inconvenient and expensive to 'patch'
Couple of Options:
a) buy and install a 82C thermostat and its correlated Fan switch.. Try a VW shop.. these are OEM items there
b) remove your AC Condensor from in front of the Intercooler and the Radiator.. A seriously poor bit of design.
BUT this assumes yr AC is Dead.. Lots are.. in which case this is a non issue.
PS:
The Lower(?) temp thermo is still pretty damn hot.. only engineering reason for elevated temps in cars was/is that it was an easy way to lower emissions.. problems with overheating were the 'collateral damage' aspect..usually occuring as the vehicles aged... after warantee usually :-)
