>>>1. What is the earliest Aero? I assume it had the 2.0l 16v turbo engine same as the 900 or spg?
The 9000 Aero debuted as a 1993 1/2 model. The 2.3 litre turbo debuted in North America in 1991 in the 9000 Turbo.
2. I am more interested in the newer ones 94-98 (?) with the 2.3l turbo. What is the difference between a CSE and an Aero (just seats and bumpers)?
The '93 Aero and CSE are the same body style. This continued until 1997. 1998, they discontinued the Aero, but any 5-sp CSE sold in 1998 has the Aero engine. This is where it gets confusing. Automatic transmission Aeros and Turbos, as well as 5-sp Turbos got the same engine - 2.3 litre, Garrett T25 turbo, 200hp, ~225lb-ft. The 5-sp Aero was the only 9000 to get the uprated Mitsubishi turbocharger, making the engine good for 225hp, and 258lb-ft. Automatic Aeros got all the same cosmetic upgrades as the 5-sp however, including the three spoke wheels (which changed style somewhat in 1994 to the "Super Aero" whels), body-coloured panels under the doors, a more agressive front air dam, and of course the interior! The seats are different, as well as leather panels on the doors, rather than cloth.
3. Is there any engine/transmission changes for the 94-98 years? I am only considering a 5 spd.
The 1993 engine/tranny is the same as the 1991/1992 configuration, only the Aero 5-sp has the different turbo. In 1994, the transmission was updated to feature better synchronizers on 1st and 2nd, and I believe they also incorporated a synchro for the reverse gear. This is generally considered to be the most reliable Saab transmission.
4. Things to watch out for when buying (besides obvious...crashes, leaks)...basically what goes wrong most on these cars?
I'll leave others much more knowledgable than myself to answer this question in detail, but I will mention the eletronic throttle system and traction control system. Many will say to avoid these systems like the plague. In 1993, TCS/ETB was not optional, and there was no switch to disable it, though Saab did release a kit to install this switch in 5-sp cars. I believe in 1994/1995 TCS/ETB was optional, and in 1996 they got rid of it entirely.
Good luck!
