The problem isn't strictly with the four-cylinder engine.
The problem is that the combination of the long-stroke 2.3L four and the ZF 4HP18 automatic transmission was - despite the balance shafts - not smooth enough at idle. Above 1200RPM, it's a very smooth engine, but below 1000RPM it shakes, and that's totally unacceptable in the market the car had to sell into.
The earlier B202 was considerably smoother, though pretty gutless off the line with an automatic - especially the T3-pressurized Turbos.
Whether we like it or not, a car's saleability with automatic transmission is crucial in the US market.
