Solution - Remove the old carbon brushes from the old holder/voltage regulator, then remove the new brushes from the damaged new unit and install them in the old Holder/VR(solder them). You need a lenght of a straighten paper clip to hold the brushes and springs back in the Holder/VR(there is a hole in the plasitic that the metal shaft on the paper clip goes into and extends out the rear of the unit that allows the shaft to be removed when inplace on the alternator0.Then place the Holder/Vr in place on the alternator, then screw it inplace ,then remove the paper clip and it allows the brushes to contact the slip rings.Allways disconnect the battery cables when working on the alternator.
You now need to remove the alternator from the engine, and check out where the short occured when you attemped to install the Vr.,so there is no internal damage to the alternator.
