Well,you got to do-what you got's to do! I can't tell you what damage was done or where it occured,because i have never done it like you tried to do.So your out of luck with my knowbase.You have a 50/50 shot a damage internal to the alternator,worst you could have shorted a wire of the field and made a break in it.
Do you think the damage/meltdown was external to the alternator,by the regulator coming in contact with the battery + cable connection on the back of the alternator,in which case your ok the worst is what happened.
Anyway,Cheer up ! and Good Luck!Your learning something and you won't do it that way again.That's progress.
