I hope I am not demented. This goes back almost 30 years.
1) 71 AMC Hornet, 3 speed shift on the column. My first car in America. Picked up for $300 in 1980, The gear box was junk. I replaced the gear box a year later. This is the only domestic car I owned.
2) 70 Mercury Capri, 4 speed. Again picked up for $300. Won't run. But all I did was adjusted the clutch cable and I squeezed a year more out of the clutch. This little car can run. I kept it almost 10 years.
3) 73 Austin, 4 speed. Had it for only two years. Strange British import.
4) 79 Volvo 240 wagon, 4 speed w/ eletric overdrive. This is my first Volvo wagon. We had a few 240 wagon's later.
5) 81 Honda Civic wagon, 5 speed. This is the only car I bought new. Kept it for 12 years. Only mechanical problem was a water pump replacement during its life. Great reliability but no power. When I came out of graduate school, I started commuting 100 mile a day and still kept the 6 months oil change schedule. 15,000 mile oil change destroyed the car.
6) 83 Volvo wagon, auto. We shopped for a stick but couldn't find one. The auto transmission leaks. I was still learning my ropes taking care of cars. We kept it for three or four years.
7) 87 Volvo wagon, auto. We will have more bricks.
8) 89 Toyota Camry, 5 speed. I inherited it from my sister. Great mechanical reliability typical of Japanese cars. In the end the body won't hold up we had to part it. It was snatched up by a buyer right away. This is my last Japanese.
9) 89 SAAB 900S, 5 speed. This is my first SAAB. I have always wanted a classic 900. I would buy a few more SAAB's. Still have three. This car was destroyed by a fire after I drove it following a carwash in my driveway one summer. I thnik water got into the spark plug recess.
10) 93 Volvo 940 wagon, auto. We still have the car.
11) 86 BMW 325es, 5 speed. This car was given to us by a friend at 106k miles. I fixed it up and my older son used it in college. I sold it last year.
12) 94 SAAB 9000 cs, 5 speed. I bought it with a broken engine in 1999. The timing chain slipped. I bought a used engine to drop it in. It was wrecked in 2004.
13) 94 SAAB 9000 cs turbo 5 speed. By now I appreciated what a good car the 9k is so I wanted more. After participating on this bulletin board I know the 9k to get is a turbo and 5 speed. I picked this car up on Ebay. Drove 250 miles each way to bring it home. It is still wife's daily commuting car. The engine threw a rod this summer. I replaced it with a used engine from another 94.
14) 94 SAAB 9000 cde, turbo, auto. I picked up this car on Ebay again for $250. It won't run so it came home on a flat bed. But all it needed was a new battery. I started converting it to 5 speed only after a week. This past March the engine was also replaced by one from a 95. Soon after the engine replacement it was rear ended with the rear bumper pushed in slightly. I am selling it now.
15) 95 SAAB 9000 cse, turbo, 5 speed. Right after the 94 9k cs was wrecked, I picked this up. It is my daily commuter car.
16) 95 BMW 525i, 5 speed. Picked this car up last year. It is my son's daily ride.
17) 95 BMW 540i, auto. Bought this car in March. It has a bad Nikasil engine 144k miles which I have replaced one 66k miles from a 93 740i. Along with the swap I also changed it to 6 speed. I hope to wrap up the project before winter comes.
We have three SAAB 9k's, two 5 series and a Volvo 940 wagon. The cars spill out from the driveway onto the street. My two car grarage is so full no car can come in. I hope I can clear one bay so at least one car can spend the winter inside.
