you were into VWs too?

i counted recently and realized i have owned (and registered) 10 VWs.

i really need to sit down and make a list of all the cars i have had. probably around 30, i would say.

for the record, beetles were fuel injected starting in '75, but always had the upright engine.

buses (i had 3) had the same engine as the beetle (had a few of them too) until '71, (more or less, in the early '60s) but '72 had the type 4 pancake engine, different from the type 3 pancake engine, but sorta an offspring of it. they got fuel injection also in '75, and it was a good thing pretty soon after. the type 4 engine is way more advanced and modern than the type 1, but more expensive to build. but they make lots of power and can last 125K miles with little trouble, where a beetle engine lives a hard life in a bus and is lucky to live to see 60K or 75K.

two good vw sites

in 1995, few of were online and online forums were even scarcer. back then, it was mostly mailing lists.

personally, i like early beetles and late buses. the splitty buses are so agricultural-feeling, not without charm, but the later ones have some refinement and the last ones (the 2 liter ones) even had a modicum of acceleration.i had a '58 ragtop bug that was so loud, but always seemed willing to have an adventure.

i had a '70 westie for 7 years, and a '71 i put a rabbit engine in (water cooled power) and hit an elk with in New Mexico. fun trip, that.
