things break, especially things with moving mechanical parts.
The decision of going with a used part was yours. Used parts are used parts and the junk yard did their share of giving you back your money minus shipping cost. You took a gamble and you lost this time.
Many indies refuse to use old parts as they don't know whether the part is defective or not before putting the part in a car. You indie did his job of installing the tranny, he put in his time.
You do realize you had the alternative of using a re-manufactured unit in the first place, right ?
I also have a 1995 9K Aero but with manual transmission. I've kept it in good mechanical condition and excellent cosmetic shape. My usual rule of estimating average monthly car expense/repair is about $300/month. The $300/month number is about the lease price per month of a simple car not even close to a 9K category. This year, it needed new tires, so I put $800 or so for 4 new Pirelli PZero Neros, so if I use the car for three months, I would have recoup my cost and I would come out ahead if the tires last for 2 years.
A recent event caused me to spend $1,500 on the car's mechanical. I don't wrench unless it's something simple, like changing plugs, electrical work, etc.. So with the tires and such, if I can drive it another 9 months, I would still be ahead as the car is in great condition.
So you spent $4,100, that would mean if you can drive it for another year, you would have recouped your money already. If this is the largest amount you spent on the car other than the purchase price, then you have come out way ahead of me already.
So I don't understand what you meant by effective repair by paying retail prices. We all pay for repair in one form or another. People who do their own repair work spend *TIME* instead of the mechanic's labor charge and that's their trade off.
Many here like to do to their own work and that's their choice in spending the time (which in many cases translate to opportunity costs, i.e. money).
Now, maybe ask yourself, if you don't fix the car, what would you have done ? Spend even more money for new or newer used one ?
