If you are handy enough to pull the trans out of the car, rebuilding the trans yourself is not as a big of a deal as you might think. Get a friction kit and a seal kit from Eriksson maybe a new pump and get a rebuilt valve body (do not try to rebuild this yourself). If you pull the trans yourself, I would open it up very carefully, take many pictures, and make a list of everthing you see wrong. Erikssons has everthing and lots cheaper than as rebuilt and salvage. Where you really save is on shipping and R&R labor. There are some core shipping cost, but minor.
The seal kit comes in seprate marked bags with exploded views numbered 1 thru about 10. Make sure it is a turbo or nonturbo big difference. Also 94 and below has difference bell housing. Be very carefull when reinstalling the trans as to engage the pump drive. The way I did it was to pop the little plastic cover off the bell housing and try to hold the torque convertor in place while lining up the trans. You know you have the pump engaged correctly when the bell housing is flush with the engine and you can rotate the torque convertor by hand with the flex plate bolts out. I am sure I have left some details out, but maybe this will inspire someone try. This was my first ZF trans and it shifts smooth and no noise now for about 800miles and clean fluid when I changed after 500miles with no crap on the magnet. PS I also replaced the torque convertor (cheap)
