Jack, here's a little history on the car, try not to fall asleep, went to see the car (97 CSE trubo) with low milage to replace my daughter's 96 cse with 100k+ miles. Used car guy says car perfect. test drive reviled bad trans. Made a deal and tried to get the car home. Didn't make it. Towed to shop and extimate $3K for trans. After picking myself up off ground, got the car home. Tried a few quick fixes, govn seals, Lucas oil, ect no good. Lots of research, noticed blue torque convertor looking through vent hole in top of bell housing. Someone has been it here before me. Wrong torque convertor (earlter type with wrong part that goes into crank shaft) This wrong TC destoried the big Timken bearing on the left side of trans and also some of the small torque needle bearing and also one of the clutch bvasket was not fully engaged into the holder. Lots of trash in the trans. I was going to try to clean the valve body myself, but when I opened it up carefully out came little balls, and things I can't describe. You don't want to ever open a valve body all the way.
You can remove the valve body with out opening it. Just make sure the car is in low gear because things have to line up on reassemblely. To make a long story boring, don't get your tranny rebuilt by just anyone. The guy in front of me had to force the flex gear in order to get the wrong torque convertor to work. There really are people out there like that.
I hope this helps someone, I am happy with the outcome, just don't want to give up the car. Maybe I will take my daughters 96 CSE and start to bring it back up. I just about replaced everthing on the 97. Repack CVs, new belt, hoses where needed, front tires, all filters, Mobil One,on and on.
