1. I replaced the transistor, but it did blow again. I replaced the motor and then replaced the transistor for the second time. No problem now for three years.
2. Your not going to hurt anything by connecting 12 volts directly to the motor as described by David, but you might want to put an inline fuse holder into whatever line you're using for 12 volts.
