and believe me, I spent hours and hours cleaning grounds, etc. Tested alternator outputs, tested EDU readings, went to a Saab dealer multiple times -- no help. Used to drive me nuts. Not a problem on my '87 or '86 9kT's, but there it is on the 97 Aero and the 97 CSE.
I even tried replacing the aux cooling fan, suspecting [?] what, perhaps a higher than usual resistance motor. IDK ... took apart the whole front end to replace the aux cooling fan, even built a plywood 'mount' on the floor to test the new fan.
Result: no difference. Frustrating, but my only 'solution': I unplugged the aux cooling fan sensor power lead [below intercooler, front lower driver's side].
Yes, I know - 'but what about the fan?' Well, I'm fairly sure that a) it's a NA market add-on, not in Euro spec and b) it's there for our hot summers, stuck in rush hour traffic, etc. Well, I live in the country and seldom drive this car in bad rush hour traffic. I understand it makes the A/C less efficient in those conditions ... and for a short while, I even re-connected it at the start of the hot season here [mid June, I live in SE Wisc].
That didn't last long 'cause the nighttime flicker is back, of course, unless you select Econ. So it's been disconnected for at least the last four years. A/C still works flawlessly, 142,000 on the car, and no voltage fluctuations.
