I would say that your Indie is guessing. His line of reasoning is this: turbo failure comes from turbo bearing failure, which comes from low oil pressure, which comes from loose tolerances on the main bearings because the bearings are passing too much oil.
Before pulling the oil pan to get at the bearings, I would check the oil feed tube on the turbo to make sure it is clear (not coked up), then check the oil pressure with a real pressure gauge. If the oil pressure is low, then the main bearings are just one of many things that can be the problem.
210k miles on a turbocharger is not an unreasonable life expectancy, especially if you have not had control over the engine oil quality and change interval for the life of the car.
Sometimes things just wear out.
