Thanks for the detailed reply. Do these cars have a problem with rust? I would have assumed that cars built for Swedish climates would be nearly impervious to rust. I was already planning on putting the car up on jack stands and crawling underneath. People clean up oil leaks to sell cars, but they rarely think to make it look spotless from underneath. I'll look for rust while I'm down there. How would I know if shocks need replacement? IIRC shocks never make it to the end of a high mileage car's life, and at this mileage it's a question of when they were last replaced.

Why exactly am I checking the seats for wear? From the pictures I have seen of them they are in amazing condition considering the mileage, certainly don't look new, but they don't sag either and have no rips.

Hmm, the server just yelled at me for trying to post the craigslist ads. Is there any way I can direct you to the photos?

Is the transmission access panel unique to saab? I'll say it's a fantastic idea, and if this guy is lying about the clutch and timing chain, it'll be a dead giveaway. How thick should the clutch materiel be? My current vehicle is the first cluch I have owned, and I've never opened it's transmission.

What does oil around the manifold mean? Oil leaking into the cylinder(s) though the valves? or would that be a blown head gasket that's leaking internally?

Is there likely to be a problem with the turbo? I have heard that they can leak oil into the intake charge, which is given away by smokey exhaust. Do they burn out and need replacement or last as long as the motor?

The 178k car happens to be located only a few miles from my father's mechanic, I I'll bring it over there and ask him to look it over. The 155k car is far enough away to present a real problem. I'll be on my own for that one.

Thanks for all the help.
