Pre-purchase Inspection by an independant Saab specific shop. It will be the $100 that saves you thousands down the road.
Mileage - from my research when I bought mine, you want an Aero that has about 140 - 170K on it. This is enough tiem and mileage to have some of the stinky repairs done; HVAC, blower, clutch, transaxle, clutch slave, AC, etc. I bought my Aero with 145 and I'm up to ~250K now. Can't see letting it go in the near future.
Condition - A minor dent here and there is fine, but avoid the ones that have dents in every panel, cracked lens', broken interior pieces. These are the ones that are obviously not maintained.
I'd outright avoid any 1993 Aero. It's the crossover year and I just didn't like the fact that it's an oddball. Lowest incidence of TCS were on the 94/95 cars. This is a 50/50 issue since some people don't have problems with failing TCS and others do; easier to avoid though.
Don't bother with engine rebuilds until the engine stops working. Even then, I'd suggest leaving that task to an expert. It's a fairly high performance engine for a complete novice to tackle; no offense.
My suggestion would be to install Bilstein suspension and a turbo back 3" exhaust as soon as possible. Those were two of the best upgrades I've done on mine and it has really made the car into a sleeper on the highway. i've surprised more than a few V8 Mustang/Corvette/Camaro and G35 on Freeway on-ramp acceleration.
Above all, take your time and buy the right one.
