by using two sections of thick, 3/4" plywood with an arch cut in the lower center [jigsaw works great] and a bit of a 45 degree angle to miss both the fuel lines and the edge of the trunk floor. A 3/4" hole drilled through the top two sections of plywood allows you to insert a section of 3/4" dowel [a foot or so] which gives you the torque to twist it while keeping downward pressure on the locking ring.
Here's a link to a picture of the tool I made - it's worked great, twice, on the '87 and the '97 CSE. Waiting for the time I'll need it on the Aero.

The back section starts as a 7 1/4" square, with the arch spanning from 1" to 3 5/8" along the bottom. The 45 degree angle/notch starts at 5 5/16" across, with the arch peaking out at 1 1/2" high.
The smaller front section is used to make the dowel hole passage deeper; it might be overkill but I had the scrap wood available.
[and as you can see, I am NOT a woodworker]
