One fear I have of new cars & crashes is that they are designed to score well in crash tests, not necessarily in the real world. I know crash tests are getting better at simulating real accidents, but the cynic in me says that companies are focusing on crash test scores, some of which may not be an actual benefit. SAAB, Volvo and others will design to do the right thing to protect occupants in an accident, regardless of whether or not it improves a test score. Think of the "Moose Test" - I don't believe this test is performed by any independent testing authority anywhere; it may be in Sweden now, but it wasn't done when SAAB started doing it. I compare crash tests to some educational certifications; just because you've passed your test and got a piece of paper that declares you a certified cost engineer, doesn't mean you know how to be a cost engineer; it just means you passed a test and got a piece of paper that says you know how to do it!
