I do mainly highway driving and I see a huge discrepancy between the DI/APC 2.3T and the T5 2.3T. I even have a stage 3 tune on my '95 Aero and it gets better mileage than my '91 ever got. I even put a '93 (taller gear ratio) tranny in there to try to help out. All that aside I agree that the '91 feels more nimble and you can hardly shift it fast enough to keep up with the acceleration. I've owned 5 9000s now and I've compiled a mental list of goodies I love from each one. Here are a few things.
'92 CD NA Auto - nothing to write home about, but it got me into Saabs! Loved the metallic blue color of this year.
'91 CDT Auto - Oooh a turbo and an armrest. This car had swedish dynamics springs on it so it was really low (onramp killer).
'91 T 5 Sp - Can haul a full size washing machine and close the hatch. Turbo with a 5 speed got me hooked. If you notice I never get another Automatic :)
'95 Aero 5 Sp - Recaro Seats are just WOW. TD04 turbo never runs out of steam like the little T25. This car also has a 3" JT turbo back which is wonderful. TCS on this one is a pain in the ass though.
'94 Aero 5 Sp - Probably the nicest Saab I've owned yet. It's a rare white on black with no TCS and it really pops.
