Self-loosening lug bolts? (long) Posted by ELaw [Email] (#699) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ELaw) on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 08:39:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '97 aero developed an annoying disease about a year and a half ago. When driving on the highway, the lug bolts would loosen by themselves, sometimes after only 20 minutes or so of driving. I'd retighten them (using the car's lug wrench on the road, a torque wrench at home) and they'd just loosen again. This is with the stock alloys and bolts. I swap over to steel wheels in the winter and the problem never occurred with those. The problem would occur on all 4 wheels but was worse on the fronts.
This spring I came to the conclusion that the cause was my putting anti-seize on the bolts. So when I put the alloys back on, I carefully cleaned all the anti-seize off and didn't apply more. I torqued all the bolts to 90 ft-lb with a torque wrench, and retorqued them after about 100 miles.
And all was well... until today! I started hearing a familiar sound on the way into the office, and when I got to work I checked and all 4 bolts on the LF wheel were loose. One just a little, one maybe finger-tight, one backed out about a turn, and the fourth backed out several turns.
So clearly the problem still exists... has anyone seen anything like this before?
