My 9000s have all three been '96s, so I'm not sure where the change happened.
But the entire rear is jacketed in a plastic cover, and the alternator is different, though some on here have said it fits fine in older cars, and vice versa.
The slip rings on the newer ones are smaller, and sit outboard of the rear bearing where the shaft sticks through the back of the case - - hence the plastic cover.
The voltage regulator-brush gear part is not the same though it can be easily removed and replaced. But NOT with alternator in car, the cover has to come off and that's I think impossible unless it's out. Next time I have one off the car I'm gonna look into whether I can mod the cover by cutting a piece out of it big enough to get at the voltage regulator to change it in car.
The brushes are smaller than the older ones and I'm not sure they can be bought as a separate part. If so they'd be much harder to change, you'd need to drill through a couple of spot welds and replace them with bolts and nuts.
