aaron said that the part is an "inexpensive aftermarket alternator that i salvaged from my 92 9000", so I'm guessing that it's the older (repairable in car) style. Maybe not, but there aren't many configurations possible that accommodate the fixed mounting holes and the pulley for the serpentine belt.
I can only imagine that the newer alternators were some sort of "cost engineering" change, as the old ones worked fine - other than voltage regulators, I had no alternator failures in more than 500,000 miles of SAAB ownership.
