Why did my '92 9000 get hot?

I am looking for opinions as to why the temperature gauge on a 1992 9000 (non turbo) 5 speed suddenly got up near the red.
I purchased the car new, and gave it to my daughter two years ago for her 16th birthday. It's the first car she ever rode in when we brought her home from the hospital after she was born. How cool is that for her first car?
Now has about 170k miles on the clock. Last summer her mechanic said there was a small amount of coolant stain around the head gasket, and a bit of oil seepage there too, so I had him change the head gasket. Expensive repair, but better safe than sorry I always think. Since then, no problems until last Thursday.
Daughter called and told me it was running hot (very warm actually since it didn't go into the red) I immediately suspected that new head gasket. Since I live in Illinois and she goes to college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo CA, I can't actually have a look myself. I had her get it towed to Morin Brothers in SLO.
Shop called me and said that after test driving the car and letting it idle for quite a while, the mechanic was unable to replicate the high coolant temps. He pressure tested coolant system, found no leaks and the coolant level in tank was normal. Mechanic is going to test drive it again this Monday.
Only thing I can think of is maybe the thermostat stuck closed. Is that possible? Any other ideas?
BTW, my daughter has an idea; Give her my 1998 CSE 5 speed (also purchased new) and give the '92 to her little sister who turns 16 this summer. Gotta love her for trying to get MY car.
Thanks,
Ed
