I don't think the hub could cause the problem, though I do like to tighten those with a torque wrench and us a new nut since they're deforming nuts and it can loosen up if you re-use the original nut. The bearing do tend to get lose with age and 'fall apart' on removal, but it's nothing to worry about (good opportunity to re-grease it though, even though they're sold as sealed bearings the grease does dry out and they'll pretty much last forever if you re-grease them). After driving, touch the back wheels. If one is much hotter than the others you probably have a sticking caliper. Definitely possible since a lot of people report trouble with the remans. You can set the rear parking brake mechanism to make sure it's not too tight. Even correctly set up you'll often feel a tiny bit of drag on disc breaks, but the wheel should still turn easily. My guess is that the fuel economy is a separate issue.
