One possible solution would be to change the mechanics so that flashers are off when the button is out and on when the button is in. The button is so rarely used that we forget about its counter-intuitive way of operating.
The force applied is not excessive in the sense that we are brutes. If so there would be many posts about the failure of all kinds of knobs, levers, buttons and switches. The switch is both poorly designed (counter-intuitive operation) and poorly built (wimpy ring).
It's only a matter of time before someone finds a better solution.
