dtk, I think you hit it dead on. If the slave, it really can only fail by leaking, and if it leaks, you WILL find fluid, somewhere, though maybe a little slow to trickle out of the bell housing.
The master can fail like a bicycle pump when its seal starts to go bad, dropping straight down. Sometimes, say after a few pumps or in warmer weather, it will work again but is on its way out.
Probably not cheap but lots easier than the slave, which means dropping the tranny.
