Well, I've had failures of the slave, the master cylinder, and the line, over time. The master cyl failure was gradual, and I started grinding the gears a bit while upshifting, so the clutch was not disengaging fully. The line was more abrupt, but then I saw the brake fluid all under the battery tray.
Certainly, the master cylinder repair is easier, and if it turns out not to be the problem, at least you won't have to worry about that part for another 200K miles. I guess I'd do the master cyl first, as you seem to be thinking.
