My 1994 car has the temp sensor shown here; this is good for 1986 - 1994 cars, costs $5. The 1995 - 1998 cars have a different sensor, but the port in the head for the sensor is probably the same.
There is some chance that the temperature gauge is exactly the same on all 9000s. On the newer cars, the reading from the sensor get filtered by the ECU - perhaps you could swap sensors and bypass the path through the ECU? Or just get an aftermarket temp sensor.
