Fuel Pump replacement comments

I recently replace the fuel pump in my 95 Aero. I borrowed the fuel pump removal toolkit from Autozone (free, just leave a refundable deposit). It comes with 8 or 10 tools, but I only needed to use the one for the lock ring.
I removed and replaced the pump with no problem using the guidance found on this site. Upon trying to start the car, it wouldn't start. I removed the return line and turned the key to run, no fuel came out the return. Pulled the pump to double check I didn't miss something. Before re-installing I poured about a cup of fuel into the basket. This time it fired right up.
I had about a quarter tank of gas, which is not enough to go over the top of the basket and apparently the fuel would not simply flow through the pickup screen and into the basket. I was a bit surprised about this because what happens if you run out of fuel. How is the pump primed in that situation?
I'm not looking for answers to that last question. I just wanted to post an interesting finding that I hope helps someone else in the future.
Cheers,
Mike
