The basket was a single solid piece with the only opening being for the pickup with the screen.
I cycled the key and could hear the pump run. I did this several times before cranking over the motor. I cranked it over many times before deciding to pull the pump out.
I did not replace the filter. Should I replace it when replacing the pump? I should add that I replaced the pump to fix a hot start issue, which the new pump seems to have fixed.
I enjoy these comments on figuring out why something happened, but the main purpose was to add a step to the fuel pump replacement procedure. Assuming you have a solid basket like mine that does not leak any fuel, it takes almost no time to scoop a cup of fuel out of the tank and pour it in the basket. Don't add too much or it will spill when trying to insert the pump in the tank.
For you that remember my initial post that listed the various issues with my recently purchased Aero, I am down to two. Front edge of the seat does not raise and lower, and rusty exhaust. It feels good to have a (near) fully functioning car.
