That link you supplied to Quasi's clutch page was a wealth of info! Should have reviewed prior to starting job.
Saw the photos and the note 'raised hub side of disc goes towards pressure plate'. I went ahead and dropped gearbox again. removed pressure plate and disc.
Apparently, I had put the clutch disc in backwards!?!?!?
I will reinstall and take another look at PP fingers position and know for sure.

LESSON LEARNED: never rush a clutch job, especially when it comes to the disc. The stamped letters on the hub are also a clue that it is the side that goes towards pressure plate. The painted white numbers are on the wear area of disc on both sides, and are a red herring as to which side is which. I will report back if it becomes functional after this adjustment.
