It's possible that the brushes on the existing voltage regulator are now three years older and are at their wear limit and/or the commutator on the alternator is more chewed up and not making good contact. Before anything else, be sure that the battery terminals are clean.
On your subquestion: if your old alternator (with whatever rating it had) has been operating fine for 20+ years, why do you feel the need to upgrade? I'd pass unless it's just a marginal price difference (not so at Eeuroparts).
