Thanks for the feedback guys. I've owned and driven a 98 Subaru Legacy GT wagon in the past. It drove fine but I was disenchanted by Subaru's failure to own up to their design flaws. It took them too many years to fix the HG issues and they basically left their owners hanging. The flat four is a bit of pain to work on unless you pull it. I can see a similar issue with their CVT. Buying new would be an option as you get a full warranty. I think the CVT's are fine in the short run. A lot of cars have them. Some have problems with them. The old Subaru 4EAT automatic was no joy, either. Gas mileage on my 98 was crappy but my CSE with an automatic only gets about 26 MPG while I routinely get around 30 with the Aero 5-spd.
