Well, I went back to Bay Ridge Saab and had them reinstall the false bulkhead cover that had been left off when I picked my car up over a week ago.
I spent some time with the manager who oversees their service department, and some of the things I was told scared the hell out of me. Not so much for myself, but for all of the other Saab owners in the area who might not be nearly as well-informed as I am. As I've mentioned, this dealer only recently acquired a Saab franchise. They've only been able to hire one Saab service tech so far, and the guy isn't a master tech. I was told he's been working on Saabs for only about 3-4 years. The service writers don't have any Saab experience, and the dealership still doesn't have a complete set of diagnostic equipment. Part of the problem with me was that they'd had to go to Saab USA just to be able to read the codes they pulled from my car. Took them three days to get the information.
More troubling is their recommendation that virtually every component in the TCS system be replaced. I ended up having the safety valve replaced at a cost of $70 for the part and $88.50 for the labor. Doing it the dealer's way would have cost me $3166 for parts and labor. Had I been a less-informed owner, I would have spent $3007 for unnecessary parts and work.
I told the guy that they'd have to do a lot better than that if they expect to develop positive relationships with Saab owners. Snowballs have a better chance of lasting a month in hell than these guys do of ever getting any business from me in the future. If this is the way you're going to treat me, what incentive do I have to trust your judgment?
In any case, they were nice enough to refund the $184 I paid for two hours' diagnostic work, unsolicited. Though I'll believe it once the check arrives and then clears.
