Clutch/shifting problems

I'm having real trouble shifting gear in my 88 9000T (which is the only car we have with snow tires - and since it snowed 5 inches today, my wife is going to kill me if she has to drive our volvo wagon much longer!).
The clutch pedal only comes back about half way and you have to push it deep into the carpeting to effect a gear change. I had an experience about a year ago where the pedal would occasionally sink all the way to the floor, but was fine most of the time. I rebuilt the master cylinder and this seemed to cure this problem. I am wondering if it was only a temporary fix - but there are no leaks from the master cylinder, and the brake fluid level seems ok (may be a little lower than last time i checked - will have to keep an eye on it).
I tried to check for leaks from the neighborhood of the slave cylinder and i couldn't see anything obvious - but it's not the easiest place to get at!
Can anybody point me in the right direction for diagnostic work to narrow down the problem?
Thanks
Rod
