You didn't say whether it was standard or automatic. I think you have
two choices. It sounds like you'd prefer to keep the vehicle, being in
"excellent" condition. You could replace the engine - $2500 sounds a
little high. Around here (MA) used Saab engines can be had for under
a grand. In fact, I know of someone who just recently bought a '93
900 engine, w/turbo, for $400 from Greenleaf (formerly B&D) salvage
yard. The other choice is to 'upgrade' both the engine and transaxle
to a later year. You'd be saving the expense of dismantling the
engine from the transaxle and vice versa, plus you'd be more likely
to find a real low mileage specimen for the transplant. The thing would
drop right in and bolt right up. I would make sure the salvage yard
included the wiring harness AND the ECU, which shouldn't be a problem
for them. Just negotiate it beforehand. If your mechanic is wary about
doing this, I've done the exact same thing to a '92, and it would be
much easier doing it to a '93, as you already have wiring for the trionic.
