In 15 years, it's happened to me three times in my 1986 9kt. One was a front CV joint, which failed because the boot had become torn and dirt got into it. As I rolled to a stop, the Montana Highway Patrol stopped in the other lane and gave me a ride into a small town with a tow service.
Two others are harder to explain. Both times, the engine just went dead. My indie replaced the electronic doodad (I know all the important technical terms) on the driver's fenderwell, and the car ran fine afterward. The second time I took the old one out of the back, plugged it in, and the car ran. That suggests this part was the cause, and the failure is intermittent, but we are still not sure. Now I have two spares; go figure.
Overall, the car has been very reliable. Note, the newer models with Trionic ignition are completely different.
