I've never seen anything in a Saab owner's or service manual that specified what type or brand of oil filter to use. The problem with a cheap versus more expensive filter is often with the quality of internal materials, specifically seals, and the cheap filters can leak past seals and abate the filtration process. Fram is a good example of this. The upper end of filter models are Delco Duraguard Gold, Mobil 1, and Amsoil--all using synthetic fiber media--and they can be used for a full 10k synthetic drain interval. Your local quickie-lube outfit should have a selection of filters to choose from. Double check their work for leaks and proper filling.

For fossil oil, change more often--no longer than 5k, with 3k best. FWIW, Saab filters are re-badged Delco (not Duraguard Gold) PF-53, costing much more to accommodate the need for Saab dealers to make a huge profit. You can get the same filter at K-Mart for much less.

I'm a synthetic chauvinist, as most here already know, and it would be your best bet in the cold NE, especially in winter where synthetic will flow better when cold. I would think a 5w30 would work except in extremely cold conditions, possibly switching to a 10w30 or 10w40 in summer if you have the luxury of switching visocities seasonally. You could use the 5w30 in summer, but that's a bit thin for my taste in any weather above 60°F. Pick a brand and check their website for specific viscosity recommendations.
