If your car has an oil themostat and cooler (my tubo does, the non-tubo does not) you can pick one viscosity for all the time UNLESS it gets to cold or hot out. There is a cooling efect from the oil pan and valve cover, ETC.I'm talking sub zero temp here, or fry eggs on the sidewalk. Without a thermostat and cooler, the oil temp will change with the outside temp a whole lot. Drive across Idaho or Montana in the winter and pull your dipstick. 20W-40 will be like glue. Check the 5W-30 in Georgia in July and it's like sewing machine oil (real thin). The syntetics are better, but at the extremes they should still be picked for the conditions. An old time SAAB Mech told me 5W-50 Synthetic in my turbo (proved right) and follow the book in my non-turbo.
