I know I'm opinionated, but I think Subarus are overrated, and underbuilt. The only reason they sell is their all-wheel drive. However, I have found that my 9kt with snow tires (Michelin Arctic Alpin, and the Blizzaks were good, too) can keep up with any four-wheel drive vehicle. I've had 4wd SUV's wipe out in front of me on the ice and still have enough control over my 9kt to avoid an accident. We drove a 9kt up to Burlington, VT in a bad snow storm a couple of years ago. Cars wrecked all over the place, and we had no trouble. When we got back, I saw that the Blizzaks were down to their all-season tread, and well into it, too. Still, the car did great. I don't know why they're so good in the snow, but vastly superior to the old generation 900.

I drove the predecessor to the Subaru Legacy - forget the name of it - but it was otherwise unforgettable because of how lousy it was. It made my old VW Rabbit look like it was built like a tank. The interior was designed with no thought towards human occupancy, the steering and transmission were a joke, the brakes anemic, the engine even more so. Oh, but they've changed, some might say. However, I can't respect a car company that would let such a piece of garbage out of their door.

My wife looked at Subarus in '97 when we were were thinking of a new car, and she was amazed how cheaply it was built, and for the same money as a base NG900. This was before I'd driven any Subarus, so she was not unduly influenced by my opinion.

So, to summarize this long tirade, I would lean slightly towards the 9000. OK, heaviliy towards it. 200hp with the 2.3L turbo (210hp with the normally aspirated V6 - is it available with the 4-cyl?), safe in a crash, tremendous in the snow. Great heater, as you know, and what you know about your Aero is applicable to her car, pretty much.
