I don't think you need to take the head off to do the chain, sprocket and guides. You do need to take the oil pan off so the timing chain cover fits up easier. The front exhaust pipe has to go if you want to remove the oil pan. Someone claimed to freeze the TC cover in the freezer before fit-up without removing either the head or the oil pan.
There are no gaskets between the TC cover, oil pan and the block. Use the blue RTV (?) gasket sealer. (or gray for even higher temperature rating. I used the blue.)
I'd avoid removing the head at all cost, barring a blown head gasket. Before you attempt the job, jack the car up, remove the valve cove, have the car in gear and rotate one front wheel to take a good look at the chain.
