i just did the timing chain on my 92 9000T myself so here are my thoughts:

"1) Feed a new chain through (nobody seems to recommend this)"

usually it's balance shaft chain that starts acting up and i don't know that you can roll the b-shaft chain in. i know of mechanics who disconnect the b-shaft chain but this seems like a hack solution to me.

"2) Change the chain and sprockets without removing the head ( potential for damaging the head gasket)"

this is the route i took. it's a little bit of a pain in the A but you should be able to remove the side cover without damaging the head gasket or removing the oil pan (as some have suggested). make sure while you are in there to replace all sprockets, tensioners and guides for both the timing chain and the balance shaft chains.

when i did mine, worldpac had a kit for the timing chain (2 cam sprockets, chain, tensioner, guides) for $80 but i had to get all the b-shaft items (chain, crank sprocket, guides) from saab which was about $200(!). i guess i can sorta understand why people would disconnect the b-shaft chain but most of the cost is in the labor to get to the side cover off. and the balance shafts do make a BIG difference.

all told it took about a solid day and a half. while all that stuff's out you may as well check the condition of the crank pulley and the water pump.

"3) Remove the head and replace the chain and sprockets (safest but most time consuming)"

without something wrong with the head, seems excessive to me...

good luck.

ps
as others have mentioned, make sure it actually is the timing chain and not the just the tensioner or something else (i've even heard of a case where just the rubber guide in the valve cover was replaced and the noise went away).
