Not too scary Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 18:32:00 In Reply to: that sounds good, if it ever has., thresholdmusic, Tue, 21 Feb 2012 13:32:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The logic is that the throw-out bearing is loaded when you step on the clutch and unloaded when you release it. The pilot bearing turns when the clutch is depressed, but not when it is released. That having been said, the whole transmission and primary drive turns when the clutch is released and stops when it is depressed.
So, I am good with the advice to change the throw-out bearing since it's easy (and since you are in there, you might as well change the pilot bearing too, but this is a slippery slope, so watch out, or you'll have a whole new clutch and a new rear main oil seal before you know it).
However, there are plenty of other things that can make noise when the clutch is released. My 99T growls, howls, and whines. It also shifts fine, stays in gear, and I am never taking apart a Saab gearbox again if the only symptom is noise, so there! :-)
Just my 2 cents - good luck!
Gary
