kansas, thank you for the tips on sourcing this seal. The death of these cars is going to be some dump little $3.00 seal, so any help getting these impossible to find parts is greatly appreciated.
I pulled the rack today propped on rags using the DougM method. Worked like a charm, much easier the second time. Thanks DougM for a great procedure.
The OD of the visible part of the seal is 1.121"
The pinion shaft diamter is 0.553". That's the shaft right above the seal that I could measure.
The top of the seal is marked W 80. No other markings visible.
From the parts diagram I have, the seal has a step in it. The OD I gave is the visible part. There is a smaller OD that is inside the rack, if that makes sense.
Right now, my plan is to put the new boot on and put the rack back in. I may put some seal leak stop fluid in.
If you regulary reads these posts, you know that I pulled my rack in November 2003 to replace the boots. Factory boot went on driver's side, Karlyn Industries boot on the passenger. The passenger side boot is NLA from Saab. The Karlyn Industries boot immediately started deteriorating. Now it has severed at the outboard clamp and the rack is leaking oil profusely. Looking in the creases, it is all cracked. The factory boot looks brand new. Amazing.
