>kansas, thank you for the tips on sourcing this seal.
Thanks for the good detailed response.
>The OD of the visible part of the seal is 1.121"
Many seals have a flat flange on the outside that is larger diameter than the bore into which the seal fits, your description makes me think that's what you have. It will be necessary to know the bore diameter, which of course you can only learn by removing and destroying that seal or getting external information. If that is your seal type, there is no problem using a seal of correct dimensions that lacks the flange, just don't push it too far into the bore if there is no shoulder at the bottom of the seal bore to stop it. There is generally no problem using a seal of a different thickness in an application like this.
>The pinion shaft diamter is 0.553". That's the shaft right above the seal that I could measure.
14mm = 0.551" so I think it is very likely that your seal ID is 14mm.
>The top of the seal is marked W 80. No other markings visible.
Some seals have identifying marks, or even dimensions, in places that can't be seen after installation. Others have neither numbers nor dimensions. W 80 is not useful.
>If you regulary reads these posts, you know that I pulled my rack in November 2003 to replace the boots.
My Saab is a '69 95 so I keep up with the Other Models and Sonett boards, but only occasionally wander over here. Rack boots for those models are likewise NLA from Saab but easy and cheap to get from Volvo as Volvo #271-545. It is the exact same boot (not sure exactly what Volvo models it fits, probably 122 at least, maybe 544 but I don't remember if 544 has rack & pinion). Presumably the racks are of similar design, & made by the same manufacturer. Not likely interchangeable but miracles do happen, but if you see where I am leading with this, you will be inclined to contact your Volvo dealer about that part#, have them work backwards from the listing to see what models it fits, then see if they have the input shaft seal for that Volvo's rack. Order one up and see if it looks like what you need, if available it will set you back a few bucks at worst.
