I'm kicking around the idea of building a radio console - with 3 DIN openings. I have A/C. The Euro Saab 90 ones (I think) only fit cars without A/C.
To make a long story short - my current setup is the hanging box with 3 gauges where the radio goes, and I hung my radio below the ashtray. This has put too much strain on the box and it is cracking. Plus the radio looks ugly - but the gauges look great.
3 DIN openings - radio - 3 gauges - ashtry (don't smoke, but I seem to put change, etc. in there.) I will get a DIN ashtry from a 9000. Also, I have the cubby hole from the 9000 console.
So the question is - wood or aluminum? I don't have much experience with metalworking, but it may give me more freedom for putting a little curve to it. I plan to upholster it with black vinyl, kinda grainy. The front panel I'm thinking black textured ABS plastic. I'm trying to mock one up in cardboard.
Any advice appreciated.
